Resident, aggregation, and NRI notes (summary)
- Rates can change without prior notice; the bank applies the rate prevailing when funds are received and the FD is booked.
- For multiple deposits the same day in the same tenor bucket, banks may apply the rate for the aggregate amount or per deposit—whichever their policy states (often the lower of the two for retail slabs).
- Tenor bucket means the tenure ranges published on the rate sheet (for example “1 Y 1 d to 2 Y”). Minimum tenor to earn FD interest is commonly 7 days for domestic/NRO.
- Senior citizens (typically 60+ resident individuals) get the extra column rates on eligible deposits; NRIs do not get senior pricing on NRE/NRO in the usual chart.
- TDS follows Income Tax rules in force. Thresholds (e.g. ₹40,000 / ₹50,000 for seniors) and forms 15G/15H may apply.
- Premature withdrawal (including sweep-in / partial withdrawal) often uses a reworked rate for the period the money stayed—commonly 1% lower than the booked rate for that elapsed period, not the full contracted rate. Exact wording is in the bank’s terms.
How interest on term deposits is calculated (typical HDFC-style rules)
| Situation | Typical treatment |
|---|---|
| Tenor ≤ 6 months | Simple interest is common. |
| Tenor > 6 months, quarterly payout | Interest paid each quarter. |
| Tenor > 6 months, monthly payout | Interest often calculated quarterly but paid monthly at a discounted rate on the quoted deposit rate. |
| Tenor > 6 months, reinvestment | Quarterly interest is added to principal; next quarter’s interest is on the higher balance. |
Banks often use the actual number of days in a year (365 or 366 in a leap year) for interest accrual when the deposit spans calendar years.
Senior citizen promotional notes (historical context)
Banks sometimes run time-bound extra premia for seniors on selected tenures. Past offers (for example “Senior Citizen Care FD”) had specific start/end dates and break-penalty rules. Always read the current offer sheet if one is running—figures on this page are the base reference grid only.
Frequently asked questions
What are Fixed Deposit interest rates?
They are the annualized percentages the bank pays on your principal for a chosen tenor. Different tenors can have different rates; RBI policy, funding needs, and competition all influence pricing.
What is the minimum tenure and amount?
Minimum tenor is often 7 days for many rupee FDs; HDFC commonly allows bookings from ₹5,000 upward for standard retail FDs—confirm product-wise.
Is FD interest taxable?
Yes—interest is generally taxed as income. TDS may apply when interest crosses prescribed thresholds; 15G/15H may be filed if you are exempt.
Can I withdraw an FD early?
Usually yes, but a lower effective rate or penalty may apply. Sweep-in and partial withdrawals follow the bank’s published policy.
Does HDFC offer tax-saving FD?
Banks typically offer a 5-year tax-saving FD with Section 80C eligibility subject to limits and lock-in rules. Check eligibility and lock-in before investing.
How do I model maturity?
